As part of our commitment to making a difference in our communities, we are continuing our partnership with the Patricia Giles Centre for Non-Violence (PGCNV), a Western Australian organisation dedicated to supporting women and children affected by domestic and family violence.
The UN’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign that raises awareness and encourages action to prevent violence.
Research by UN Women has found that almost one in three women experience violence in their lifetime - and in 2023 a woman was killed by partners or family members every 10 minutes.
“The crisis of gender-based violence is urgent. There is no excuse for violence against women and girls.” said Kelly O’Rourke, South32 Chief Legal and External Affairs Officer.
South32 is proud to support organisations which are working to address the causes and impacts of domestic and family violence, such as PGCNV.
For more than 30 years, PGCNV has been providing services and accommodation for families affected by domestic violence and abuse.
In FY24, South32 contributed A$100,000 to PGCNV to refurbish a unit at one of its properties, creating a welcoming, safe space for families in need. Volunteers from our Perth office also assisted with garden maintenance, providing a refreshed outdoor area for residents.
This year, South32 has committed A$300,000 to PGCNV over three years, enabling several impactful initiatives:
- A$100,000 is funding a playground upgrade at a PGCNV property, creating a safe, enjoyable space for children, bringing a bit of respite and play during challenging times.
- A$100,000 is supporting additional refurbishment activities at another PGCNV property, further enhancing safe spaces available for families.
- A$100,000 is dedicated to developing children’s therapeutic programs, providing tailored case management plans that address each child’s age and individual needs.
“We have worked with PGCNV for several years and our latest funding contribution will further assist the Centre in providing critical support to families affected by domestic violence.” said Kelly.
“South32’s support allows us to provide families with safe spaces and fresh starts, empowering them to rebuild their lives,” said Debbie Cameron, CEO of Patricia Giles Centre for Non-Violence.
Through partnerships like these, we’re helping to create brighter futures for individuals and communities in need, making a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.
