Formerly known as the International Council on Mining and Metals, ICMM’s purpose is leadership through collaboration to enhance the contribution of mining and metals to sustainable development.
Through our involvement with ICMM, we support continual improvement at the industry level, as well as helping to ensure that the leading companies are working together to strengthen the contribution of mining, minerals and metals to sustainable development.
In 2002, ICMM adopted 10 principles for sustainable development, which encompass issues relating to environmental stewardship, the role of mining and metals in society, and human well-being. ICMM also develop and publish Position Statements, which member companies commit to following to as part of the membership commitments.
ICMM Mining Principles, Performance Expectations and Position Statements have been incorporated into our internal standards and support our Sustainability Policy and Code of Business Conduct.
Our membership of ICMM also provides engagement and support for the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative and the commitment to reporting transparently according to this mechanism.
The Carbon Market Institute (CMI) is an independent membership-based not-for-profit organisation. CMI has established a role in the evolution of the carbon market in Australia. CMI works with Federal and State Government to ensure effective implementation of policy and facilitates the networks, knowledge exchange and commercial interaction amongst key Government policy makers, regulators and different sectors of industry.
Through its membership of the International Aluminium Institute (IAI), the Nickel Institute and the Manganese International Institute, we aim to promote the use of these metals in sustainable applications. We take part in initiatives run through these groups, which include lifecycle assessment and improvements in product stewardship and safety.
The Industry Task Team on Climate Change in South Africa is committed to working with industry and business groups and government departments to ensure sustainable economic growth while transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
We are a participant of the United Nations Global Compact an initiative which calls on companies to align strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
